General Information
The University incorporates 11 Departments,
preliminary training courses, 32 Chairs, R & D Division, Ph.D.
courses, administrative divisions and maintenance services, a
scientific-information centre, commercial centres, social
facilities, teaching-auxiliary, cultural and educational
subdivisions.
There exist two University affiliates in Segezha
(the Republic of Karelia) and in Kuvshinovo (the Tver oblast).
More than 300 teachers are working at the
University including 50 Full Professors, 180 Associate Professors.
Of 5000 students learning at the University, 3000 are full-time
students.
Many University graduates work at enterprises of
the Russian pulp and paper sector situated all over the territory of
Russia from Sakhalin to Kaliningrad. However, the majority of the
mills are concentrated in the North-West and Central regions. For
example, about 100 University graduates are working as engineers and
top managers at the enterprises each such as Volga, Vyborgskaya
Cellulose, the Syassky Pulp and Paper Mill, the Pitkeranta Pulp
Mill, the Saint Petersburg Goznak Mill, the Saint Petersburg
Board-Polygraph Mill, etc. Even greater number of graduates (200 and
more) is affiliated to the mills each such as Mondi Business Paper
Syktyvkar, the Segezhsky Pulp and Paper Mill, the Kotlas Pulp and
Paper Mill, the Kondopoga Pulp and Paper Mill. The University
graduates work at a number of well-known companies as well as at
other firms, organisations and centres of the pulp and paper
industry all over the world.
During recent years, a national educational
system reform is being put into effect in Russia. The reform
provides for the measures for improvement of the national system of
higher education too. It is planned to reorganise the system in such
a way that it is adjusted most closely to the European one, which is
being created in the frameworks of the Bologna process. Our
University is working for the Bologna process implementation.
History
The history of our University dates back to 1931,
when the Leningrad Promcooperation Institute was founded. In 1959 it
was renamed into the Leningrad Technological Institute for the Pulp
and Paper Industry.
In 1993, the Institute got the status of
University and was renamed into the Saint Petersburg State
Technological University of Plant Polymers. Beginning in the
fifties, research works dealing with pulp, paper and board
production were being carried out actively in the University.
Now the University is the only higher educational
establishment in the Russian Federation providing integrated
training of specialists for industrial enterprises engaged in
in-depth chemical processing of wood. The majority of University
graduates work in the forest, pulp and paper industries, the
chemical industry, the power sector of Russia, CIS and foreign
countries.
Research and Development (R&D)
The University takes part in several
international and federal programmes such as “Research and
Integrated Use of Wood Biomass” (since 1990), “The Integrated Use
and Renewal of Wood Raw Material” (since 1991). Since 2002, the
University is a leading organization in implementing the scientific
and technological programmes such as “Environmentally Safe
Technologies of Wood Raw Material Harvesting and Processing” as well
as “R & D in Priority Lines of Science and Technology Development
for 2002 – 2006”.
The Scientific Schools headed by leading
scientists of the University gained international recognition. For
example, the environmentally safe papermaking technology based on
the aerodynamic dry forming method that did not have any world
analogues has been developed and implemented at the University.
University scientists have developed the closed water-cycle
technology for pulp and paper mills, which has been awarded the
state prize of the Russian Federation in the field of science and
engineering.
Presently, the University is developing business
relations in the field of machinery building with a number of
foreign companies such as Voith, Metso, Andritz, etc.
The University participates regularly in many
national and international programmes. University scientists carry
out fundamental and applied research in collaboration with their
colleagues from U.S.A., Germany, Canada, Poland, France, China,
Finland, etc.
The University representatives are members of a
number of International Committees and Commissions such as UN FAO
ACPWP, COCVER.
